What is Bokashi?

Bokashi is a form of anaerobic fermentation that produces a specialty fertilizer through which larger yields and healthier plants are achieved via probiotic effects in the soil. Once you have inoculated your soil, a vast network of beneficial, anaerobic bacteria as well as fungal symbionts will develop, significantly improving your soil's microbial ecosystem.

The breakdown of amendments into forms available to plants is accelerated by the bacteria, while the fungal mycelium will scavenge for nutrients the plant needs in exchange for sugary exudates.

Among the beneficial microbes found in Bokashi are Lactobacillus bacteria which demonstrably increase plant growth, and Streptomyces bacteria that provide immune effects to your soil and plants, warding off invaders.

How do I use Bokashi?

Bokashi can be used as a soil amendment, a top dressing or a composting agent.

Soil Amendment:
To use Bokashi as a soil amendment, 2-4% of soil volume is ideal.

Topdressing:

As a topdressing (very effective during the bloom phase), you should apply a handful of Bokashi to cover your topdressing. Due to the vigour of microbial populations and the resulting increase in nutrient availability when using Bokashi, we recommend you amend your soil slightly more frequently using the OGS Complete 'Nutrient Kit', to supplement the increased activity and yield.

Composting Agent:

We recommend that you bury fresh food waste into a compost pile and sprinkle with Bokashi before covering it. It's recommended to put the food waste at least 6 inches deep into the compost pile or use a Bokashi compost Bucket (500g Bokashi / 20L waste bucket).
